What is CBD

By now, you might’ve heard of a little thing called CBD. Naturally, you probably thought to yourself, “What is CBD, and what exactly does it do?” Well, fear not, we here at Lock & Key Remedies have compiled a brief guide to teach you all about this important compound and its many medical uses.

What is CBD, and What does it Refer to?

The cannabis plant, otherwise known by its scientific name cannabis sativa, is made up of several hundred important medical compounds, called phyto-cannabinoids. One of the most important of which is cannabidiol, more commonly referred to as CBD.

What is CBD

The Endocannabinoid System

While cannabinoids like CBD are found in cannabis, endocannabinoids are molecules naturally produced by the body that somewhat resemble cannabinoids. Cannabinoid receptors interact with endocannabinoids and cannabinoids in the body like a Lock & Key. That is what’s known as the endocannabinoid system.

Over time, a person’s endocannabinoid production might weaken and create a clinical endocannabinoid deficiency, which causes many health problems. That is where CBD comes into play.

CBD works as a supplement that naturally adheres to a body’s cannabinoid receptors. That synchronicity gets the body back in balance and brings along all of those positive health effects.

What is CBD

Is it Psychoactive?

Unlike some of its fellow phyto-cannabinoids like THC, CBD does not contain any particular psychoactive effects. Basically, that means CBD won’t get you high. CBD products like ours are formulated from hemp, which contains less than 0.3% THC.

THC is essentially the part of cannabis that makes people feel high. Therefore, since our vape oils has 0.03% THC and our tincture uses whole plant extracts under 0.3% THC, they don’t contain that psychoactive element. That’s why so many people feel comfortable using CBD in their daily lives.

What is CBD

Therapeutic Effects

Believe it or not, cannabidiol has the widest range of health benefits out of all of the different phyto-cannabinoids. What is CBD, you ask? It’s actually best understood by getting to know its most essential medical uses:

  • Anti-convulsant – minimizes various forms of epilepsy and relaxes muscle spasms
  • Anti-inflammatory – relieves and prevents swelling in internal and external injuries
  • Anti-oxidant – reduces cell-damaging oxidative stress, which slows age-related deterioration
  • Neuro-protectant – preserves neuronal structure, limits and slows damage of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s
  • Anti-anxiety – modulates signaling of serotonin receptors that play a role in anxiety
  • Anti-depressant – improves transmission and availability of serotonin and dopamine in the bloodstream
  • Pain reliever – interacts with receptors that regulate pain sensation
  • Inhibitor of cancer cell growth – shown in lab environment to prevent the spread of cancer cells knows as Angiogenesis
  • Improves immune system function – can suppress an over-active immune response, a key factor in managing auto-immune-based diseases
  • Promotes bone growth and density – enhances peak bones mass and regulates bones cells to decrease age-related bone damage

However, no matter what you’re using CBD for, it’s best to check with a doctor to make sure it’s right for you. Then, when it’s time for dosage, start small and work your way up to what’s comfortable.

If you didn’t know what CBD was before, then you sure do now.
